The Sneaky Way Water Bottles Age Your Skin
Everyone knows that H20 and skincare go together. How many times have we been told that drinking water is great for flushing out toxins and achieving a clear complexion? But while water is great, drinking out of water bottles isn’t the best if you’re trying to combat wrinkles around the mouth. Health professionals are cautioning that frequent puckering of the mouth by drinking from bottles can create wrinkles. They point out that the repetitive motion of pursing the lips can lead to deeper lines appearing. Here’s what we found out.
How do mouth wrinkles develop?
Research shows that after reaching adulthood we lose 1 percent of collagen each year as we age. Unfortunately, this affects our lips and mouth as well. The mouth above the lips are supported with collagen and fat pads. When this diminishes, it leaves depressions in our skin. This can be accelerated by making certain expressions often, like puckering.
How do water bottles cause mouth wrinkles?

Lines and wrinkles around the lips and mouth are known as smokers lines. They get this name because of the puckering expression used to smoke cigarettes. This is the same expression made in order to drink out of a water bottle. Dr Berzin, a Washington D.C. based dermatologist claims wrinkles around the mouth can form after just two years of regularly swigging from water bottles – and those with a sports top are the worst. When you’re drinking from a water bottle, you’re pretty much making the same face as you are when you’re smoking a cigarette. It’s worth noting that drinking from a straw can also create the same expression.
What alternatives can you use instead to prevent wrinkles?
Dr. Mitchell Chasin, a skin doctor based in Livingston, New Jersey, also warned that the frequent puckering of the mouth can result in deep wrinkles around the lips. So, what exactly can we do to prevent wrinkles around the mouth and lips? While we can’t prevent them entirely, there are some things you can do to help slow the process. The most straightforward and cost-effective alternative, according to him, is to consume water from a vessel with a wider opening, such as a cup. While it isn’t always the most convenient option, it is the best at preventing premature aging in that particular area. So pack a collapsible cup in your bag or car to always have on hand. Your skin will thank you!
