Makeup Tips and Tricks for Your Fabulous 50’s

Remember when we first learned how to do makeup in our teens and 20’s? We’ve been using those same tricks ever since! But as we grow older, our faces change, so our makeup tricks should too. If you’re in your 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, and beyond, I’ve got some new tips just for you!

I learned these from Elise Marquam-Jahns, a makeup artist who knows all about makeup for those 40 years young and beyond.

Blush The Apples of Your Cheeks for a Flushed Look

Elise says we should fight gravity by putting blush on the top of our cheekbones and brushing it upwards. And remember, our skin color can change as we get older, so we need to find out if warm or cool shades look better on us. Once you’ve found the right color, go for it!

Don’t Neglect Your Eyebrows

Even though we might not need to pluck our eyebrows as much when we get older, Elise says we should start filling in any gaps—especially at the ends. To make your eyebrows look fuller, try an eyebrow pen that matches your skin color and brush upwards. After 40, fuller is better, no matter what the latest trend is!

Taking Care of Your Eyelids as Usual

Your eyelid area needs as much care as the rest of your face. By looking after it the same way you always have, you can keep your eyes looking and feeling great.

As we age, the area around our eyes can change. But we can make our eyes look more open by using a light, nude shade on the lid and under the brow. It’s also important to use a medium to dark color so it shows up even if your eye area is a bit hidden. To give your eye a little lift, try making a backwards seven shape at the outer corner.

Keep Lips from Becoming Dry with the Right Lipstick Formula

Elise says we all get influenced by ads and trends. But don’t let that make you choose a lipstick that doesn’t give your lips enough shine. The right color and sparkle can make your lips look more attractive and help keep them moisturized. Matte lipsticks or nude lips can make us look older, so go for a color with a bit of sparkle.

Don’t Abandon Eyeliner

There’s no need to stop using eyeliner. It’s great for making your eyes stand out and adding to your overall look. If you find it hard to apply, Elise suggests using an eyeliner with a smudging tool, or a Q-tip, for a softer look. You can also try an angled eyebrow brush to apply it, which is easier and gives a pretty, soft effect. She recommends using a dark brown on the top lid and a lighter brown on the outer part of the bottom lash line.

Apply Foundation with a Soft Buffer Brush

A soft buffer brush is perfect for putting on foundation. It gives you a smooth, even look and a natural, flawless finish. The brush also blends the foundation evenly, making it easier to get the look you want.

Make Your Eye Shadow Look Even by Making Small, Circular Strokes

Using light and dark eye shadow above the crease can make a big difference. To make sure your eye shadow goes on evenly, try using a circular motion with your eye shadow brush. The old “windshield wiper” technique might not cover areas of the lid that have crinkly skin.

Investing in Creams and Liquids is a Good Idea

Elise says cream or liquid foundations and cream blushes are the way to go. Powder can settle in fine lines and make them stand out, and it can also look blotchy and uneven. Plus, as we get older, our skin tends to get drier, so it’s good to use products that have more moisture in them.

Women at any age can look amazing. I hope a few of these tips become a new staple in your makeup routine!
