“Healthy Foods” That are Contributing to Your Wrinkles
And you thought healthy foods were good for your skin! That’s true with some foods. Yet not all foods that are deemed healthy help fight wrinkles. In fact, some can even cause them. Wrinkles can be an unavoidable element of the aging process, but your diet can have an influence on how quickly they appear. If you’ve begun to see them on your forehead, eyes, and around your mouth, you might want to look at what you’re consuming. Examining what you eat can help you determine the source of wrinkles, and reducing certain “healthy” foods could mean a decrease in the number of wrinkles. Here are some to watch out for.
Rice-Based Snacks
Rice-based snacks, often referred to as rice cakes, are a popular choice for dieters and health-conscious eaters alike. These snacks are typically low in calories and fat, and are made from a variety of ingredients, including brown rice, soybeans, and other grains. Rice cakes are often eaten as a snack on their own, or added to salads or other dishes for a crunchy texture. They can also be topped with spreads or dips for a quick and easy snack.
Many people add these snacks to their shopping carts when they are trying to eat healthy; however, their simple carbohydrate content leads to a high glycemic index. Consequently, when they are consumed, one’s blood sugar level rises quickly and this can result in wrinkles.
Cheese and Dairy Products
Believe it or not dairy products, (especially cheese) can be a major contributor to wrinkles. If you want to reduce wrinkles but can’t forgo your enthusiasm for cheese, it is recommended that you choose a low-fat option. Cheeses that are aged and high in fat contain large amounts of AGE’s so selecting ones such as Mozzarella or cottage cheese could be beneficial, as they contain approximately 10 times less AGE’s than high-fat varieties.
Agave Plants
Agave is a type of plant with many different uses, ranging from food and fiber to medicine and even fuel. Its multiple uses have made it an important resource for people in many different regions. It’s a succulent plant, meaning it can store a lot of water in its leaves and can survive in dry climates. Agave is also known for its sweet sap, which can be used to make a variety of foods and drinks. Its fibers can be used to make clothing and even paper. The plant also contains medicinal compounds that can be used to treat a variety of ailments, and has been an important part of many cultures for centuries.
All that being said, Agave syrup is often recommended as a replacement for sugar in recipes due to its purported “healthiness.” However, it contains a high concentration of fructose, which has been linked to wrinkles and other aging signs. Research indicates that this fructose can cause ten times more signs of aging than the traditional glucose sugars. Yikes!
Coffee
We know, you were hoping this one didn’t make the list. Unfortunately our beloved jitter juice is a skin ager. Although it may be difficult to persuade you to abstain from your beloved coffee, we can still ensure that you have all the facts. To be more specific, caffeine can cause wrinkles in a very underhanded way. Having a cup of coffee late in the day can lead to difficulty sleeping at night. During your sleep, the cells in your skin strive to restore themselves from the UV rays and other environmental hazards they endured throughout the day. So, if you are going to indulge in coffee, try to limit yourself to one cup and avoid using a straw which will lead to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles around your mouth.
Citrus Fruits
Surprising right? Who knew fruit could be bad. Different varieties of citrus fruits are popular throughout the world for their tart and tangy flavor. These fruits, which are part of the citrus genus, include oranges, lemons, grapefruits, limes, and tangerines. Each of these fruits has a distinct taste, and they are often used in cooking, baking, and juicing.
If you eat citrus fruits like lemons, oranges, or grapefruits, it’s important to bear in mind that their juice can cause harm to your skin. To avoid this, make sure to wash your hands carefully after consuming any of these fruits before you go outdoors.
Yogurt
This dairy treat can be enjoyed in various forms. It is made by fermenting milk with bacteria cultures, resulting in a creamy, tangy snack that is packed with healthy probiotics. It has been a popular food for centuries and comes in a wide variety of flavors. Many people choose yogurt as part of their daily diet as it is a nutritious and delicious way to get their daily dose of calcium. Those yummy flavored yogurts can be deceiving; they contain an exceptionally high amount of sugar. This sugar has the capability to break down the amino acids in collagen and elastin, which can result in wrinkled and droopy skin.
Did some of these “healthy foods” surprise you? Hopefully you learned something new. The more you know, the less you age!
